The Kay Danes Story

Dr. Kay Danes is an extraordinary humanitarian whose life exemplifies what can be achieved through strength of character and personal commitment to service above self. Dr. Danes stands as an exemplary citizen with an unwavering belief in human rights and justice.

With over 25 years of humanitarian and security sector experience in some of the world's most hostile countries, her dedication to bridging communities through understanding and empathy is recognised by the Australian Government and international organisations.

In 2021, when Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, Dr. Danes was part of a volunteer group of international military veterans, aid workers and intelligence operators covertly coordinating the security and evacuations of thousands of at-risk Mission Essential Personnel of Afghan origin through Kabul international airport, and overland routes to neighbouring countries. Dr. Danes successfully rescued thousands. She appealed to the Australian Government for an historical change to its Immigration instrument to expand resettlement opportunities for previously excluded Afghans working with Australian missions in Afghanistan. Thousands of those lives have since been saved, due to her selfless devotion to humanity.

Dr. Danes has a demonstrated record of exceptional achievement in human rights and social justice. She is the recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia, an award instituted by Queen Elizabeth II to recognise notable Australian citizens who make a significant commitment to humanity. She is also a recipient of Rotary International awards and Australia Day Honours and Awards and other notable awards for her volunteer service to humanity.

Dr. Danes' own life story is one of extraordinary courage and resilience. In 2000, she endured a horrific hostage ordeal, suffering torture at the hands of an authoritarian socialist state. After her freedom was secured, through diplomatic negotiations, she turned her harrowing experiences into a force for positive change. ‘The Danes case’ as it is often referred to in Australian diplomatic circles informs an Australian Senate Reference Committee Inquiry into the wrongful and arbitrary detainment of Australians overseas.
